We have all come to know “Black Friday” as a mega shopping day, but how did this begin? No, it wasn’t with the Greeks and Romans; it was more with the American retailers of the 1960’s.  The big kick off to the holiday shopping season, immediately after Thanksgiving on a Thursday, led stores to finally put black ink in their accounting ledgers on that Friday.  Thus the name, “Black” meaning “Black (ink) Friday”.  Profitability after months of red ink!

The Black Friday sales are often jump started with doorbuster deals and coupons aplenty with many retailers opening as early as 5am.  More than 100 million of our 350 million Americans typically participate in this now annual unofficial “holiday”.

Of course here in SoBECA, we generously give you the option to shop Black Friday elsewhere with the mobs, or enjoy the open air, music filled venue of our infamous Midnite Madness on the Saturday immediately after Black Friday.  Many SoBECA retailers will be open from 7pm-midnite on Saturday, November 27 with spectacular specials for your shopping pleasure. Kick off the season with sanity at our Midnite Madness sale!

Footnote:  Those in Philadelphia have their own explanation for the term “Black Friday”.  They say this refers to the thickly dark crowds on streets and sidewalks during the shopping stampede on that Friday, often disruptive, and clogging thoroughfares.  Better to shop here in Costa Mesa!
